Sampling for DNA analysis from the oral cavity. Simple and painless.
Sample Collection for DNA Analysis
Section for Forensic Genetics – Kinship and Identity
Sample collection for DNA analysis is carried out after the test has been ordered and you have received the consent form(s) and sampling kit (microcard and buccal swab, unless otherwise agreed).
Sampling may be performed:
-
By the participants themselves
-
At a doctor’s office or healthcare institution
-
At another official body (e.g., embassy or police), if applicable
If the results are to be submitted to a public authority, it is important that the sampling is conducted in a secure and verifiable manner.
Sampling from the Oral Cavity (Cheek Swab)
Important: Do not eat or drink for at least 20 minutes before sample collection.
Step-by-step instructions
-
Remove the microcard from its packaging. Avoid touching the pink collection area. Label the microcard with the full name and date of birth of the person providing the sample.
-
Remove the sampling swab from its packaging. Do not touch the round, flat foam tip.
-
Rub the flat foam tip firmly up and down 8–10 times on the inside of one cheek.
-
Using the unused side of the swab, repeat the procedure on the inside of the other cheek (8–10 strokes). Apply firm pressure, but not enough to cause discomfort. Avoid excessive saliva, as this may prolong the drying time.
-
Open the microcard. Press one side of the foam pad onto the pink area within the marked circle. Turn the swab over and press the other side onto the same area. Do not rub back and forth. The pink colour will fade, indicating that biological material has been transferred.
-
Important: Leave the microcard open to air dry for at least one hour. Do not touch the pink area during drying.
-
Once completely dry, fold the microcard closed and place it in the storage bag (plastic or foil). Seal the bag securely.
Signing and Submission
-
The consent form must be signed by the person providing the sample.
-
For children, a parent or legal guardian with parental responsibility must sign.
-
If sampling is performed at a doctor’s office or other official institution, the sampler must also sign the declaration.
