Do you want to become a stem cell donor?
In Norway new stem cell donors are only recruited among blood donors. You must be healthy and between 18 and 40 years at time of registration.
First, you must register as a blood donor in one of the blood banks in Norway. Registration as a stem cell donor also takes place in the blood bank.
Are you willing to donate stem cells?
- Imagine that you or a loved one were diagnosed with leukemia or another serious blood disease. The chance of surviving more than a few years is limited without a stem cell transplant. Transplantation using stem cells collected from the blood or bone marrow can save lives.
- Imagine being able to provide healthy stem cells to a patient and thereby save their life.
- The more people willing to donate stem cells, the more patients can find a suitable donor and undergo transplantation.
- As a volunteer in the bone marrow donor registry, you may be asked to donate stem cells to a patient.
Would you like to sign up for the Norwegian Bone Marrow Donor Registry?
- Only blood donors can register. Contact your local blood bank.
- As a volunteer donor, you will first undergo tissue typing. This is done via a standard blood test.
- Once you have been tissue-typed, your information is entered into the bone marrow donor registry’s data base.
- When a patient needs a transplant, we try to find a donor who matches the patient's tissue type.
- The stem cells are collected from the donor only when the actual transplant is about to take place.
Requisition/consent form in English – for use at the blood bank.
