Interpreting centre at Oslo University Hospital

The Interpreting Centre is a section within Oslo University Hospital (OUS) that provides interpreting services to patient at OUS, Akershus University Hospital (Ahus), and Sunnaas Hospital. The section is headed by Thomas Petter Ekhaugen.

Qualified Interpreters in many languages

The Interpreting Centre handles assignments in more than 70 languages. We provide interpreting services to Oslo University Hospital, Akershus University Hospital, and Sunnaas Hospital.

In addition to interpreters travelling to assignments at the three hospitals, the Interpreting Centre also offers telephone interpreting and video interpreting. At our premises at Ullevål, we have dedicated interpreting studios that are soundproof and shielded from view. From here, the Interpreting Centre facilitates interpreters for hospital departments across three counties.

To ensure effective communication through interpreters in hospitals, the Interpreting Centre also provides courses and training for hospital staff.

If you are interested in learning more about the Interpreting Centre, or would like an adviser to visit your department to talk about good communication via interpreters, please contact us at tolkesentralen@ous-hf.no or call +47 23 02 69 90.

Our interpreters undergo a thorough recruitment process. In addition to reviewing their qualifications (tolkeregister.no) and references, we conduct interviews with each interpreter.

We place great emphasis on working with interpreters who demonstrate a high level of professionalism and have an interest in interpreting within the healthcare sector. We offer professional development at the intersection of healthcare understanding and interpreting expertise.

The Interpreting Centre was established in 2014 on behalf of the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority as a collaboration between OUS, Ahus and Sunnaas Hospital, and became an internal section at OUS in 2016.

The aim of the Interpreting Centre is to ensure quality and competence in interpreting services at the three hospitals, as part of the hospitals’ overall goal of providing equitable healthcare services.

Quality and competence are maintained through close dialogue with and follow-up of interpreters. The Interpreting Centre also contributes to increasing knowledge among hospital staff about the use of interpreters.
